Hotzone.tv Park Opening Hintertux 2011 – The Shred is on!
Perfect conditions for pros and ams to herald the season.
From 30 September to 2 October the Hotzone.tv Park Opening went down on the Hintertux Glacier in Austria. Sunshine, a Betterpark shaped to perfection, great snow conditions, and a level of snowboarding that even renowned events like the Air & Style would find hard to match dominated the three-day event. International top riders, among them Torstein Horgmo, Mark McMorris, Seppe Smits and Cheryl Maas, met local stars like Steve Gruber, Alex Walch, Chris Kröll and Peter König. While some people just enjoyed the slush on the slopes and made use of about 20 different brands in the ever-busy Test Arena next to the Fernerhaus Station, for most the mind-blowing contest and party schedule was just too tempting.
On Friday, pros and AMs sessioned the perfectly shaped Betterpark. And despite the laid-back character the riding level went through the roof. Even for a Hintertux Opening the number of attending world-class riders was unusual. For example, Torstein Horgmo’s tricks sometimes followed those of Roope Tonteri, who followed Markus Keller and Marko Grilc. In the evening Hintertux welcomed the journalists with the traditional media dinner and an exclusive pre-premiere of Argon Films’ snowboard movie EUPHORIA. For everyone else the SHRED Warm Up Party in the ‚Kleine Tenne’ in Tux offered the perfect kick-off to a weekend full of freestyle fun and parties.
On Saturday it was once again all about sick riding action: The pros showed technical tricks on the two big kickers At the hotzone.tv Session of the Dudes, hosted and judged by local hero Werni Stock and the infamous Drew Stevenson. Besides highlights like Arthur Longo’s Cab 3 / Switch Backside 7 combo, Reini Rieser’s Backside 9 and Victor De Le Rue’s Frontside 9 to Cab 1 it were Marko Grilcand Peter König who impressed the two judges most. While Fügen-local Peter König bagged the ‚Most Stylish Award’ with a double frontflip / backside rodeo combo, the charismatic Slovene was awarded the ‚Most Impressive Rider.’ 14-year-old Roland Tschoder of Ischgl won the ‚Special Award’ with a one-footed air over the first of the two kickers of the pro line.
From 2pm on the parking lot at the gondola station was turned into the Aftershred Session: You could practise the most extreme tricks during the Gloryfy Bag Jump Bomb Drop Session on the original Bag Jump, show your ollie skills in the K2 Pop This! Contest, and the many brands and magazines present made sure you walked away with heaps of goodies and stickers. All of this was accompanied by pumping DJ tunes and plenty of cold drinks. And while the last tents were being erected outside, the ‚Tenne’ bar was turned into Zillertal’s party of the year. The Rhythm Opening Night featured the Innsbruck-based Wax Wreckaz and Berlin DJs Smith and Smart. Tenne and outdoor area were crammed, and the positive vibes of the weekend took hold of the entire crowd. With a bit of luck you scored some Rhythm goodies before heading home with the convenient shuttle bus.
On the once again sunny Sunday the groms showed their skills during the Billabong Kids shoot. Coaches Wolle Nyvelt and Seppi Scholler as well as Pleasure photog Markus ‚Fischi’ Fischer were impressed with the riding level of the 15 kids. The kids surprised the photo coaches with a trick repertoire including frontside boardslides and 270s to front board on the corrugated pipe and backside 3s and one-foots over the kicker Wolle and Seppi praised the high level, the creativity and the motivation of the kids.
At noon the riders met once again fort he Cash for Trix Session next to the Fernerhaus. Joelle Juchli showed her talent as the only participating girl, Seppi Scholler ran riot with creative grab slides, Karli Terzer laid down a meaty switch backside tail 270, and Georg Obermeissner showed gnarly frontside blunt reverts. Other impressive riders included Simon Pircher, Michi Schatz, Rudi Janda, andAndrej Marincic, all of whom helped stoke the crowd even more on the upcoming winter.
As every year the Hotzone.tv Park Opening Hintertux proved to be the ideal season kick-off for the European snowboard scene. No matter if park obstacles, testing opportunities or party schedule – visitors, brands and pros were thrilled. By the way: Many pros will stay in Hintertux for the weeks to come and make use of the perfect park conditions. On top of that from December on there will be a new park in Hintertux: The Rookiepark, composed of four different lines, will be open all winter. If you want to lap the park with your favourite pros or step up your freestyle game you should book your accommodation on www.tux.at now and set out for Hintertux!
